If you are at the coast and experience any of the following:
Move immediately to the nearest high ground, or as far inland as you can. Walk or bike if possible.
For a local source tsunami which could arrive in minutes, there won't be time for an official warning. It is important to recognise the natural warning signs and act quickly.
Remember, LONG or STRONG: GET GONE.
Official warnings are only possible for distant and regional source tsunami. Official warnings are disseminated by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management and will identify by colour which areas need to evacuate by identified risk. These colours are standardised nationally to red, orange and yellow. The yellow zone is farthest inland or in elevation and is also the area that should evacuate in the event of the natural warning signs.
Once evacuated, wait for the all clear from Emergency Services before returning home.
