A Web Feature Service (WFS) is a technology that allows you to retrieve GIS data direct from us over the internet and display the data in your own GIS applications. WFS is similar to WMS which allows a client to overlay map images from multiple services over the internet. But while a WMS server provides raster based maps, a WFS server provides raw co-ordinate data that the client uses to produce a map.
This innovation is based on a specification from the Open GIS Consortium (OGC).
