Project: Kenya: Energy Development Plan to decarbonize the Economy
Prepared for Power Shift Africa, prepared by the Institute for Sustainable Futures, The University of Technology Sydney.
The wind speeds in the offshore areas in Kenya range from 4.9 to 7.6 m/s at 100 m height. For offshore wind analysis, we have included areas with an average annual wind speed of ≥ 6 m/s, Kenya's wind potential has been mapped under two different scenarios.
• Scenario 1: Available offshore areas – restricted by protected areas (PA), and water depth (≤50m, WD50) (PA + WD50)
• Scenario 2: Available offshore areas – restricted by protected areas (PA), and water depth (≤500m, WD500) (PA + WD500)
Available offshore areas: restricted by wind speed (≥6m/s), protected areas (PA), and water depth (≤50m, WD50) (PA + WD50)
Offshore Wind Potential Area (total):Available offshore areas: restricted by wind speed (≥6m/s), protected areas (PA), and water depth (≤500m, WD500) (PA + WD500)
