Welcome to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) soil suitability webGIS map developed for farmers and investors to easily identify the most suitable areas to cultivate specific cash crops in Sierra Leone including rice, cassava, potato, maize, onion, oil palm and cashew.
This soil suitability map was developed from data collected from a comprehensive national soil survey conducted by Njala University from 2020-2023, in partnership with the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI).
The national soil survey and production of the soil suitability database was funded by the BAFS Project (BAFS/PCU) with funding from the European Union (EU) under its 11th European Development Fund (EDF) through the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), under the Agricultural Engineering Division.
The project was contracted by
the National Authorisation Office (NAO) and BAFS PCU as the supervisory body, alongside the BAFS TAT who provided technical support.
The development of webGIS map of the soil suitability was funded by the World Bank / Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP). FRSP also aims to ensure the sustainable operations of the soil analytical unit of the project and to develop the webGIS map into a full blown national soil management information system (NAMIS).
