Historical GIS Map of the American Canal Zone in Panama

This project, led by geographer Drake Sprague, utilizes historical Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to reconstruct the landscape and infrastructure of the American Canal Zone at various points in its history, thereby safeguarding its heritage. Through meticulous research of original maps and documents, the project digitizes and aligns these features (all by hand) within their true geographic context. This task is particularly challenging due to the significant alterations made to the terrain over time, including the relocation of roads and buildings, changes to shorelines, and the submergence of early townsites. Original maps also vary in scale, detail, and accuracy, adding to the complexity of aligning their features to a common geographic base. Since the Panama Canal was handed over to the Republic of Panama in late 1999, the former Canal Zone has undergone extensive transformation. As this landscape continues to change rapidly, the project aims to create a comprehensive record of its historical geography, offering a valuable timeline that illustrates the evolution of this great American endeavor.
